How I Found Perfect Beauty

Just after my 10th birthday, we moved house. I no longer had to share a bedroom with my little brother, and I was freed from the inconveniences of sleeping on the top bunk. I only rolled off once, but I hit the floor with a thud and a new, horrible kind of shock bruised me. My aunty handed me a blue lollipop, and told me that a little turbulence in life is inevitable. You get shaken, but the trick is not to stay shaken.

The other main inconvenience of living on the top bunk, was that every time I listened to a CD at night, I would have to get out of bed and warily climb down the ladder, just to hit pause. In the dark I fiddled with the plastic buttons, using elimination logic to find the on/off switch. And then I climbed back up.

After we moved house, the blue CD player started getting dusty, and screens started to light up our new house, crazy words like YouTube were added to our family dictionary. I rarely used CDs, except for a beginner's learn-a-language Chinese course I took when I was 13. Gradually the old machine was forgotten and I'm not sure, but it probably silently departed to the op-shop.

I have to congratulate my mum on something. The CDs she bought me and my little brother weren't silly songs written about ladybugs, or other biological creatures and the pink fields they lived in (*they don't live in pink fields). We fell asleep in sophistication. My dreams always began to a tune of Mozart, or Beethoven, sometimes Vivaldi.

I liked to beg. Not for money (the tooth fairy covered most of my expenses) but for Bach. I begged for Bach. My favourite CD was a long episode of his life story, intertwined with sonatas, and moving renditions of his greatest works. The piano sounds and organ harmonies sunk into my head, and I don't think anyone knew how much that CD meant to me.

Last night I was having trouble getting to sleep, I was bored of social media, and my eyes were too strained to read. My brain began to reel back further and further and suddenly a memory was recalled. In my pink little bedroom, elevated 2 metres off the ground (a long way to fall ahem), I could pick out the sound of Bach. My Johann Sebastian Bach.

I had a wild thought. Could it? No. Well might it? Probably not. Is there any chance? Doubtful. I got shaky, but I searched for the CD online, and ambiguously clicked on my screen.

I think my heart stopped for a second. I turned up the volume, and audibly smiled at the familiar beginning. I lay down, turned the lights out, and waited. The story of Bach began again.

I had run around and had blocked out every piece of light, because, you see, it had to be absolutely dark. And once in my bed, I opened my ears with great satisfaction, like someone had just delivered me my favourite meal.

In the darkness of my room, Orchestral Suite #3, Minuet in G Major began to play. Tears rolled out of my eyes. Rather than question my unpredicted emotion, I just let them flow and enjoyed every second of the piece.

But then I began to wonder why I was crying. I think: it was because it sounded beautiful. Amit Ray said “Beauty is the purest feeling of the soul. Beauty arises when the soul is satisfied.” You have the capacity to hear, see or feel something beautiful. You just have to find it, like finding a passion hidden in acres of hobbies. And when you find the beautiful thing that makes you sing, a firework goes off inside and purposely sets you on fire. That's what happens, and these are the thoughts you think, when you listen to Bach.

Where do you see beauty? In music? Trees? Paintings? Animals?

  1. I see beauty in seasons... the seasons are so clear in the UK and the path I take to walk to school is the best place to see them. A winding path, with trees towering above it and the ground covered in snow or leaves.

  2. I see beauty mostly in music as well but sometimes I see it in the people around me. Sometimes the when I people watch and we all do from time to time I sit and I watch the busy cars trying to get to different places and people walking on the pavement and sometimes I think that is beauty. People trying to get to the ones they love or places for the ones they love. Love this blog post please check at mine http://bloggingkindofgirl.blogspot.co.uk/ thanks xx

  7. What a nice post! I've always grown up around classical music and I think that classical music is such beautiful music. I have one memory where my dad was playing a classical music gig in a big cathedral (he plays percussion) and on the second level of the cathedral, there was a huge cathedral organ. I discovered a latter where I could climb up and sit on a ledge right behind the organ, and it was absolutely amazing to be right up against that huge organ as it played in the cathedral. I could feel the vibrations from the organ, and it was so beautiful.
    Thanks for this beautiful post!!

  13. I love this blog post as I thought you were literally going to talk about 'beauty' such as makeup and hair. However I received so much more! I love the way you have written this, and for me I see beauty in small things everyday; the leaves swirling around in the wind, school children giggling with their friends and so much more!
