Love, Style & Life | by Garance Dore

Meet the lady who travels between Paris and New York, living in a realm not just exclusive to fashion. She is also an author and has written for The New York Times, Vogue and other recognised publications. This extremely polished lifestyle is walked out in stilettos (she confesses in her book) and, to the awe of myself and others, originated from her successful blog. I was inspired by a pash of jealousy to read her new book "Love x Style x Life."

A book can be filled with wisdom, or it can be filled with dry reflection from someone who mistakes themselves for someone sage. Garance has distinct stylistic taste that is enviable, yet she readily shares her insider intelligence. I finally understand what fashion week is about, and I realise the foolishness of following trends. She has educated me on the 'classics' of fashion through impressive visuals and a recognisable French vocal (Parisian, remember?).

Publications that come from brands or celebrities are always a risky bunch. Because instead of being born from an innocent individual, they come charging in backed by advertisements and money. They tend to be insincere and try to teach us a mainstream message that we have already figured out (we're a smart crew). But Garance has a beautiful rawness, and a genuine elegance that comes across in her writing. Throughout the book she has embedded fresh advice, such as 'free hellos' and an in depth guide to thank you notes.

She admitted she wasn't the most beautiful girl. I loved that. She says "beauty is not that important." She carries the belief of enhancing your physical features using makeup (as do I) but she shares the story of how her sister, blessed with amazing natural beauty, had a toilsome time as a teen.

"The danger is that if you make beauty the focus of your life, you attract people who do the same."

Her opinion was that models can be some of the most insecure people in the world because their whole life is their look, and if their physique is not up to the industry standard then they lose their job, and relationships end. To know whether the person loves you because of your character or because of the shape of your nose; physical beauty comes with a lifelong striving.
What does a woman like Garance do in a day? Her sprightly 24hour diary (day in the life) illustrates her daily schedule throughout different years of her life (a page from 2007, 2012 and 2015). Her real actions are crossed out and replaced by what she 'should' be doing, wonderfully relatable.

'Love x Style x Life" is an experience similar to getting lost in a white walled stationery shop. Everything is clean and simple and pleasurable. Glossy pages and an unpretentious colour palette. The entirety of this volume is a destination to relax and a concord between your mind and your eyes. Interspersed with light humour, it is an accurate portrait of glamour. What else would you expect from somebody who lives between Paris and New York?

Golly.
